Ingredients
For the Donuts:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F / 45°C)
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling out the dough
- Vegetable oil for frying
For the Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, sugar, melted butter, salt, vanilla extract, and eggs. Mix well.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Donuts:
- Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a donut cutter (or two different sized round cutters) to cut out the donuts and holes.
- Place the cut donuts and holes on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a cloth, and let them rise for another 30-60 minutes, until doubled in size.
- Fry the Donuts:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully add the donuts to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried donuts to a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil.
- Prepare the Glaze:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Glaze the Donuts:
- Dip each warm donut into the glaze, making sure to coat both sides.
- Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to allow the excess glaze to drip off and set.
- Enjoy:
- Once the glaze has set, your donuts are ready to enjoy!
